ABM: Why did you choose to work in development?
OR: I was already interested in real estate and development, however I didn’t really know what I wanted to pursue in my career. I went to the University of Toronto, and took a variety of courses, I was exposed to Urban Planning, that is when the light went off for me. I subsequently transferred to the University of Waterloo and pursued my degree in Urban Planning.
ABM: Who is your biggest inspiration?
OR: At different points in my professional and personal life I have been fortunate enough to have been impacted by a variety of individuals, who helped me grow and learn and inspire me in different ways. All of these individuals have contributed to who I am today, and I continue to be lucky to have inspiring people in the current stage of my life.
ABM: What is your proudest career moment?
OR: I’ve been fortunate enough to have many proud moments throughout my career. What stands out for me, was the moment that I realized I was a mentor and role model to other women in my profession; it meant so much to me that my hard work and perseverance had been recognized by my peers, and they looked to me as an example and for assistance to help them succeed.
Additionally, I was recognized in the inaugural “Champions in the Spotlight: Celebration of Women’s Leadership” in 2014, which celebrates exceptional women in real estate.
ABM: What do you think is the most significant barrier to women in leadership?
OR: Finding an open environment for opportunity to advance, and having confidence in your knowledge and abilities to do a great job.
ABM: What is one piece of advice you would give to a young woman starting out in the development industry?
OR: It is hard to pick just one…Build your network and relationships based on respect. Know that at the right points in your career, you will have to leave your comfort zone to accomplish your goals. Remember that notwithstanding what success you achieve, you are “above” no one else. And finally, it’s ok to want work/life balance, find what works for you, and stick with it.
ABM: What does the International Women’s Day Campaign #ChooseToChallenge mean to you?
OR: Challenge the status quo to make gains for women in your industry, and create an environment that allows for the advancement of women in the industry.
ABM: On International Women’s Day, what is the most important message you want to share with young women?
OR: Be strong, independent, get to know yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you deserve. Recognize that helping one another is a good thing for all women.
